It is a tradition during the Chinese New Year that children would receive red envelope containing money from their relatives.

When the children start working and when their parents retire, the tradition is for the grown children to give the red envelope with money as gift to their parents.

Here is a picture of Jessica, granddaughter to my sister Susan. Jessica is showing off a New Year red envelope. Susan said that Jessica gave her a handmade card in a red envelope to show appreciation for all the love and care that grandma provided during the previous year. Even though there is no money in the red envelope, Susan treasures it more than anything else. Jessica is a sweet and thoughtful little girl.
